Solar Water Pump Projects
Solar power panels allow you to do powered projects at sites lacking access to the electric power grid. By understanding the power load and using the appropriate number of well-placed panels, you can create useful or simply decorative water projects almost anywhere you have access to a well, pond or stream.
Stock Pond
Whether you wish to fill a pond for watering livestock in a remote location or keep a fishing pond at a viable level, solar pumping is a good solution. A low-voltage DC pump will run off of a small number of solar panels and provide a steady flow of water to your pond. Use a pump controller so the pump only operates when the solar panels deliver enough current to drive the pump; this will extend the life of the pump and make the system more reliable for a location where maintenance checks are infrequent. This system will not need to deliver large quantities of water on a given day, but will provide adequate water when averaged over several days.
Solar Water Fountains
Fountains are a pleasant fixture, providing a relaxing sound, cooling the air and raising humidity in dry locations. In order to drive a spray of water, you will need a higher pressure pump than that used in a stock pond situation. Unless you are using water from a "tap" or other source of water with low levels of dissolved minerals, you should consider a water softening or other treatment stage. This will give a more pleasant spray of water from your fountain and extend the useful life of your pump and piping system.
Remote Drinking Water Supply
Take stock water pond to the next stage of safe drinking water for humans using solar equipment. A small DC pump can be used to pull water from the stock pond to your treatment system. Generally plan on one gallon per day per adult for drinking and cooking needs when setting up your system. Use a simple sand filter to remove most impurities and waterborne pathogens (disease-causing organisms). A passive solar water distillation rack can further purify your water, making even seawater potable.
